Welcome to a new episode of the Blowing in the Wind podcast! From the vibrant streets of Pitrufquen to the renowned conservatories of Belgium, Marcelo Moncada’s story is one of dedication and artistic exploration. Born in 1978 in Pitrufquen, Chile, Marcelo Moncada is a versatile tenor and soprano saxophonist and composer. In 2002, he embarked on a musical journey to Belgium, where he continued to refine his skills. Marcelo pursued studies in Jazz and Popular Music at the Royal Conservatories of Antwerp and Gent, under the guidance of notable mentors such as Bart Defoort, Ben Sluijs, and Dieter Limbourg.

About Marcelo Moncada:

In the Mapuche-named city of Pitrufquén, meaning “between ashes” or “place of ashes,” Marcelo’s musical journey began in his teenage years. Starting as an alto saxophonist in a local brass band, he quickly developed a profound connection with the instrument. Captivated by its allure, Marcelo’s commitment to the saxophone deepened, leading him to seize an opportunity for a musical exchange in Antwerp, Belgium.

Antwerp became the hub where Marcelo’s passion for the saxophone evolved and solidified. In this vibrant city, he not only continued his studies but also formed his own bands with talented European musicians. Marcelo is well-versed in classic jazz. However, he has also broadened his musical path by exploring genres like Latin jazz, jazz-funk, and jazz fusion.

His dedication to musical excellence led him to participate in workshops conducted by acclaimed figures like David Liedman, Gerry Peacock, Mark Turner, Francois Louis, Michael Brecker, among others.

34 countries with Travel Sax!

In the wake of the pandemic, Marcelo embarked on a European tour, adorned with two Travel Saxes strapped to his backpack. Experimenting and playing with this versatile instrument, he traversed an impressive 34 countries! including iconic destinations such as New York, Turkey, Canada, Egypt (twice), and, naturally, his beloved Chile. The Travel Sax isn’t just an instrument; it’s a musician’s perfect companion for life on the go.

In his latest music project, the album “Gravity”, Marcelo showcases the Travel Sax versatility. By smoothly incorporating this unique instrument into certain songs, he’s made room for it in his musical repertoire. However, Marcelo wants to emphasize that the Travel Sax isn’t a saxophone; it’s a distinct instrument that serves as a special tool, enabling him to practice whenever he desires.

In Marcelo’s own words, “The Travel Sax has changed my life, especially in terms of studying. It allows me to practice at night and even while traveling.”
