Lorenzo Ferrero – The Grammy Arranger

Orchestrating Grammy Success ✨

Episode fourteen of the Blowing in the Wind Podcast is Live!

Welcome to Blowing in the Wind, where we explore music and innovation. In episode 14, we chat with the talented saxophonist and composer Lorenzo Ferrero, winner of a Latin Grammy for his arrangement of ‘La Flor de la Canela.’ Lorenzo shares his journey from Peru to studying music at Berklee College of Music in Boston and eventually settling in Los Angeles.
Lorenzo’s journey started in his childhood, surrounded by his father’s passion for classical music. Intrigued by jazz and improvisation, he found the saxophone after experimenting with different instruments. Captivated by its sound and inspired by jazz legends, Lorenzo’s musical exploration broadened. When composing, he blends saxophone and piano, using the piano for melodies and harmonies. Lorenzo’s path blends classical influences, jazz exploration, and a commitment to improvisation.

From Peru to Berklee 🚀

Lorenzo’s decision to apply to Berklee College of Music marked a significant turning point, showcasing his commitment to his musical path without a safety net.
But, reflecting on the past, Lorenzo acknowledges the importance of embracing uncertainty and pursuing one’s true passion. Berklee wasn’t simply an academic institution to him; it was a nurturing environment where dreams could flourish and passion could be honed into expertise. However, he emphasizes that genuine growth goes beyond formal education, highlighting the value of real-world experiences in shaping one’s musical identity.
In 2015, Lorenzo’s talent earned him a special opportunity from the Vienna University of Technology. He was asked to compose the opening waltz for their 200th Anniversary Ceremony. The next year, he made the move to Los Angeles to continue his career.
In LA’s busy music scene, Lorenzo collaborated with well-known film composers such as Christopher Young, Thomas Chase Jones, Conrad Pope, Brent Fisher, and Federico Jusid. His work stretched across several movies and drama series, establishing him as a versatile force in music and in the entertainment industry.

Award-Winning Latin Grammy Artist and Grammy Nominee

In 2018, Lorenzo co-founded the Afro-Peruvian Jazz Orchestra, marking a significant milestone in his career. Their debut album, “Tradiciones,” released independently in 2020, has gained widespread recognition. Currently, it’s in contention for the esteemed title of Best Latin Jazz Album at the upcoming 2021 Grammy Awards.
Moreover, at the previous Latin Grammy Awards, the album received nominations for Best Latin Jazz Album, underscoring its exceptional quality. Lorenzo’s outstanding arrangement of “La Flor de la Canela” from the album also earned him the prestigious Best Arrangement Award, showcasing his remarkable musical talent.
In our podcast, Lorenzo shared how he and Anibal first connected through music. But their bond strengthened through the National Symphonic Youth Orchestra. Anibal moved to the U.S. before Lorenzo, but upon Lorenzo’s arrival, they eagerly collaborated on experimental projects. Their shared love for Peruvian heritage led them to compose Big Band charts, culminating in an album featuring the award-winning ‘La Flor de la Canela’ arrangement. Departing from traditional Latin jazz influences, they aimed to introduce a fresh sound by blending Peruvian rhythms with jazz, making their music accessible while staying true to their roots. 🎷🎶

Afro-Peruvian Music

But what exactly is Afro-Peruvian music? This innovative concept defied the typical Cuban or Brazilian influences in Latin jazz, seeking to incorporate a diverse array of South American rhythms. Lorenzo and Anibal’s unique fusion of Peruvian elements with jazz was driven by a desire to make their music accessible to a wider audience while preserving the authenticity of their cultural heritage. Through their innovative blend of musical styles, they continue to push boundaries and redefine the landscape of Latin jazz.
